Kaamatan season family online-Catch up

image

Weeeeeee!!! Thank You Lord for technology!!! Screenshot photo of myself in a videocall with the Wong fam-bam.

image

Had a great time chit chatting with the littlest one. Now that she was more “chatty”. Although she did at one point said “is anyone else gonna chat with Yiyi? Cos it seems like I am the only one chatting with her the longest!” LOL.. haaaiihh.. kids.. I remember being her age and dreading to talk to older people in the family. Oh those innocent young minds..

image

It’s Kaamatan festival back home today, which means, PUBLIC HOLIDAY!! So it was good timing to call them up without missing anyone and any inconvenience of the 4-hour time difference we had in between us.

image

Not sure why the video settings this time is so messed up. While I go portrait and they go landscape, my video can’t rotate accordingly.

We were at it for almost 2 hours I believe! It’s lovely to have these technology to help bridge the gap and distance. Of course, it still doesn’t beat being in the midst of their presence physically. Aaaanndd.. the icing on the cake? I just might be able to go back for the holidays end of this year with sponsorship! Wooohoooo!! No guarantees yet, but am sure gonna pray very hard for that favor and provision. Yay!!

Jumpa lagi naaaanti Nek! #grandma

2016-05-15_10-58-03

Grandma left today. I mean, she was in the hospital for more than a week now, and the doctors did tell us she might not survive this time. So I was a bit prepared for that. But grandma has always been strong and persistent, never giving up and was really stubborn actually. But this time it was for real.

After coming home from Sunday lunch out, got a text from mom that nenek was no longer responsive and I got really worried. Quickly made a video to say Hi to her hoping she would see it and maybe wake up, but it was too late. I called last week and spoke to grandma but only managed to get some groans here and there, it wasn’t much of a conversation. I just wished I had thought about doing the video earlier. Stupid me.

To be honest, growing up, I have had a share of love hate relationship with grandma. She’s not the affectionate type and has always been more of a “tough love” type. I remember as a child, tagging along with her to her office cleaning job whenever it was school holiday season cos no one could take care of me at home while mom was out to work. I really appreciated those moments where she would take me to the wet market downtown during lunch time after she had finished work and we would eat at the food court there. As we passed along those wet market stalls, I’d always try to get grandma to buy me those little chocolate snacks with toys in them. Oh how I remember those days..

I also remember how she loved making fish nets and she hand made them by herself! I now wished I had took some interest in learning them since there’s never gonna be anyone in the family who would continue that skill anymore. She was also skillful in making beaded bracelets and sewing. She always helped me hemmed my pants that were too long or fixed whatever clothes I needed fixing. That woman even made all her clothes by herself! She’s the inspiration for me to take up sewing someday. But most of all, I remember how she always made use of extra cloth and sewed blankets from those left over fabric. Never wanting to waste anything.

The two person I hold so dearly in my heart in this photo, have both left.. 😦

Terry was always grandma’s favorite, but it was ok cos I was just a kid and it didn’t really bothered me that much when I didn’t even realize there was favoritism going on right? But anyway, I sure miss them both..

I really wish I could be with my family at this time, sucks that the timing was just not on my side as I have exams this week, and immigration is very strict with classroom attendance.

As a friend of mine said to me, it’s not a wrong or bad timing, its just God’s timing.

It sure is.

I’m just relieved that in my heart I know she has accepted Jesus Christ as her savior and we get to see each other again someday. 🙂

Catching up with the Whānau. #family #skype #ldr

screenshot

It’s been a while since I last Skyped with the girls. With the girls being at school all the time, and myself in my lectures too. There is hardly time that we can find to actually get everyone together and try to bridge the gap/distance.

Thankfully, it’s the school holiday season now, and the girls are just at home. I am also at home, again, supposedly studying for my paper on Wednesday, but I am hardly the studious type that just sticks my nose on the books all day. I spent at most about 3 hours on doing some calculations and reviews and exercises, then I had a very late lunch at almost 3:30pm before deciding I should stop the studies and relax my mind. Chat with Lauren on Skype too before my flatmate got back from her vacation in Christchurch and she started chatting me up.

It wasn’t until late in the evening around 8pm before my sister managed to give me a call on Skype and I got to see the fam bam (well, except for the brother in law who is at work).

Talked to the girls, or at least tried to. I mean, teenagers! When have they ever been interested in talking to adults right? I really miss the smaller version of them, like 6 or 7 years old. But yea, I did try. Asked them about what their plans for the holidays were, asked them about their best friends and what they talked to their friends about, you know, trying to find something I could relate to them about. Ended up talking about Chloe’s Minecraft games and other games that she’s been playing, and also talked to Dan and Tabi about Justin Bieber. Yup, I had to resort to that, I mean like what else can we talk to teenagers about? Life? Future? I mean I used to be a teenager and I hated it when adults talked to me about the future!

So yea, I didn’t want to torture them and released them of their obligations after a while and just talked to my sister about more heart to heart stuff. Wasn’t long though because the internet signal started to get really lousy and poor we had to abruptly end our conversation. But it was also getting pretty late here by then. The whole Skype conversation probably took us almost 2 hours. So it was a good long catch up session.

I guess I am in a long distance relationship again….

…with my whānau of course. 🙄

I never knew there’s this viewing place though, and its quite a relaxing place to kill time since it doesn’t get so crowded.

image

Also managed to use WeChat video call and talked to the Wongs before I leave.

Charmed Bracelets.

image

My aunt gave me this bracelet with trinklets hanging from it.

image

Its got scissors, a pagoda, a teapot, a clothes iron, a bell, a teacup, an abacus, a handbag, and a violin as the charms. Don’t ask me what they all represent cos I have no clue!

image

Don’t know how much this gold charm bracelet is worth but though I may not exactly wear these often, I still treasure them because of its sentimental value.

Thank You Lord for blessings!

Its no coincidence. Fourth Uncle is here!

image

Last year when I visit my aunt, I got to be reunited with my eldest aunt! I mean its very rare to get a photo with these siblings together. And God is so good! This time I get to see Uncle KV!

image

Brother and sisterly love! Uncle KV drove up to Malacca from JB to do some errands and dropped by his sister’s house for a short visit. Aaaawww so sweet of him..

Uncle KV is not much of a photo person but my aunt is such a cheery person and always willing to smile on photos. Wish I didn’t have to have the double chin though 😒

Semi-homemade Prawn Noodles. #malacca #blessed

image

My aunt, the very diligent cook making my lunch! So blessed!

image

I wish I could help her with cooking but she can be quite the perfectionist and obsessive compulsive with certain ways of preparing a meal. She refuses to get my help with anything 🙄

image

She didn’t make the soup from scratch this time but used an instant prawn noodle paste instead. Says she got them from Singapore eventhough the packaging says its a Malaysian product.

image

image

My Prawn noodles and I.

image

My aunt says I gained a LOT of weight. Uh huh..

Missing them already! #family #farewell

image

The fambam sending me off at airport terminal 2. Early morning flight is not easy but I guess we just got to deal with the lack of sleep in return for cheaper flight costs..

Its hardest to leave when you have fun nieces like these to be with 😅

Raya Open House and Yam Cha sessions. #home

image

Went to uncle Ricky and aunty Aini’s house at Penampang for a Raya Open House party. Ricky is my brother in law’s brother, which technically also becomes my brother in law too. We arrived there about 6:30pm or so, and there wasn’t much people yet at the time. I ate just a little bit of ketupat with rendang, they tasted good although I’m just not a big fan of Malay food since my taste buds are just accustomed to more Chinese flavors.

image

Danica’s bff Chrisella came along with us, these girls remind me of myself and Amie back in our teenage years.. awww

image

As the party people started pouring in, like the Majimbuns arrived, the place started to become a bit crowded and so we ended up sitting at the kitchen area where there is another big screen TV there showing Father of the Bride Part II in which my sister, the girls and I ended up just watching the show for the rest of our time there.

Then about 8pm, we left the party and went on to Damai Point to yam cha and have some snacks with Aunty Kitty and Jude Limus. Just a nice bonding session and quick catch up before I leave town again. Had the famous grilled chicken wings from the stalls there. Oh yummy yummy I am gonna miss them Chicken Wings!

Again, the selfie focus does not work for large groups. Everybody elses face just turns blur 😒

Lunch at Ridge Cafe after Church. #fishNoodleSoup #KKfoodOnly

image

At JiaJun’s father’s stall in Kepayan Ridge for their very special Fish Noodle Soup!

image

Still trying to figure out the focus for this camera especially on Selfie mode. I haven’t checked the manual yet but it seems that everytime I use the selfie mode, the focus goes only to my own face and everything else behind me becomes a blur. =.=’

image

Can never get enough of this delish meal!! And even the Kit Chai Ping comes in a jam bottle like glass instead of the regular drinking glass. Cool idea!
